Short description

A study of the Kingdom of God: the nature and values of the Kingdom; the relationship between its present apparent imperfection and future visible glory; Israel, the Kingdom and the Church; the action of God in establishing it; and the corresponding responsibilities laid on believers.

Long description

"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God". This book presents the teaching of Scripture about that Kingdom in which, in time to come, the glory of Christ will be displayed to the world. Now, "the Kingdom of God is the acknowledged framework within which the lives of true disciples unfold themselves". Its service demands "the first of our prayers, the finest of our energies".

What the Kingdom is, then, is the key question for every Christian. When was it inaugurated? How and when will it end? In the present time of imperfection and failure, what meaning can be attached to it? What part do Christian disciples play in it? What part Israel? Does the understanding of this subject create a better appreciation of Christ? How can I serve Him better if I know about it?

Building upon articles which first appeared in "Scripture Truth", the writer offers a lively and thorough treatment of these and related questions. His treatment extends from the genesis of the term in Daniel, through a searching examination of the Lord's own statement of its "normal" behaviour in the "Sermon on the Mount", to its "mysteries", hidden in the familiar parables of Matthew 13. An original discussion of these parables leads to an illuminating analysis of the preaching of the Word - God's characteristic present activity in His Kingdom.

What is now "mystery" will be made known to all; the "hidden" will appear in glory. The Transfiguration prefigured this glory; the "Olivet Discourse" announced the events that precede it. Chapters of contrasting tone in the third section of the book engage the reader both with the warmth and the solemnity of the subject. A penultimate chapter considers the allusions to the Kingdom in the Epistles.

"Seek ye first" ends in "Occupy till I come". The book's aim is that we should be waiting for the Master, and trading with what He has given us until He returns.

With indexes to facilitate reference, the book forms a valuable aid to New Testament study.
