Short description

“Footsteps in the Snow: 105 Days in lockdown” was started on day three of the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK. It is a series of devotional impressions written as the author reflected on different Bible verses early each morning of lockdown.

Long description

Gordon Kell had wanted to write a series of daily Bible readings for some time, but never expected a crisis on the scale of COVID-19 to be the catalyst for this book.

When lockdown began, Gordon and his wife started a WhatsApp group called “Keep in Touch” so that Christian friends could maintain contact during the crisis. He wrote a daily post to start the day, and “Footsteps in the Snow” is a collection of the first 105 posts of these. As the days passed, he was encouraged by readers to consider publishing them as a book; so here it is!

Most of the content was written as stand-alone impressions, but there are also some short series based on characters and themes. The book can be used as a daily Bible reading aid or simply picked up and read in short bursts.

“Footsteps in the Snow” is intended to turn our eyes of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. Gordon has always believed, since becoming a Christian over 50 years ago, that the power of the Christian life comes from daily communion with the Saviour. We become like Him by being in His presence. Central to this is allowing God to speak to us through daily reading the Bible and discovering Christ in its pages. If this book encourages its readers to do this, it will have served its purpose.

Publisher's comments

The author writes:

“I used to get up very early to write the daily posts which form this book. Every morning I was joined by a friend. On one of the highest branches of the large tree at the bottom of my garden, a blackbird would sit and sing his heart out. It was a joy to listen to this happy bird, and I missed him when he finally moved on.

I hope this book puts a song in your hearts as you join me, reflecting on the love, grace and mercy of God and the many, many blessings we discover in Jesus Christ.

A friend told me not long ago that I believed in fairy tales. I knew which football team he supported and suggested that if he had faith in this team, he could hardly accuse me of believing in fairy tales! Faith has never been in short supply. What and who we have faith in are the key questions.

Attempts to discredit faith in Christ have continued for centuries yet here we are and like the apostle Paul we can say,

‘The life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me’ (Galatians 2:20).

I am so thankful we have the opportunity to walk each day in fellowship with God, following our Saviour and living in the Spirit.”

Author biography

Gordon Kell has been involved in Christian ministry for over fifty years. Apart from a period of five years in full-time Christian service, this has always been in a “tentmaking” capacity. With his wife, June, their Christian ministry has included young peoples’ work, camps, Christian holidays, young married couples’ weekends, and conferences throughout the UK and occasionally in Europe. Until this book, Gordon’s written ministry was linked with his long involvement in radio Bible teaching. Gordon and June have one daughter, three granddaughters and a grandson, and live in Northern Lincolnshire, not far from the birthplace of John Wesley who once said, “Let your words be the genuine picture of your heart.”

Gordon commands a wide respect for “rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), combining awareness of its depth with succinctness and a personable style.
